What are you thinking about? (game development edition)
I remember thinking one time that all creativity came from a communal sort of shared subconscious, a vast network formed by brainwaves, and that those who appear to be ahead of the curve (the innovators) are simply more attuned to this theoretical network.
Or, it could be possible that people with a shared pool of influences and experiences, will inevitably come to the same conclusions.
That was actually the plot for a story I was writing at one point. One character suffered a brain injury which allowed him to consciously tune into the "Networked Multi-Consciousness" and so he was able to "predict" all forms of innovation, and indeed direct the hive mind toward his own goals. Naturally, best intentions aside, he used the knowledge to become a sort of despot. The protagonists of the story were writers, artists, scientists, and mathematicians, and they set out to kill the despot. An unintended consequence of his death was a feedback spike through the entire NMC which shut it down, forcing people to think for themselves as opposed to reaching an unconscious hive mind consensus. Then it flashed ahead a few decades to show that it wasn't quite as uplifting an ending as it seemed.

So yes - focus on the characters! I know Solitayre wrote a really interesting article (review?) that mentioned Tales of Symphonia's groan worthy and ripped-off plot being saved by it's characters. ;w;
Good point. There are a few character things I have in mind that I've never really seen a game do before. If I'm competent enough to pull them off, I think it could turn out really well.

The idea that a plot is somehow in any way worse just because it's been done once before is mind-bogglingly foreign to me. Every plot you could possibly think of has been done before. When SWTOR did it, it had already been done six hundred million times before. So what?
I know there are only seven original stories, and everything else is just a derivation or permutation thereof, but it still bothers me to see that something I came up with in my head, and thought of as mine, already exists, independently of me.

UPRC- I had it for working with fiberglass, and with a canister change, auto body painting. I've also used it during auto detailing after a bout with chemical pneumonia stemming from using the bargain basement stuff that one lot had on hand instead of the green friendly chemicals I was used to. (They didn't want to pay for the good stuff.)
I also use it for cooking. For some reason, the smell of certain meats cooking triggers my gag reflex something fierce, so I frequently end up wearing the gas mask in the kitchen.

A Civil Garden Party ~ 2k3 Discussion
I'm not a big fan of the default resources for VX. Usually, when I check out a VX gamepage, I try NOT to look at the screenshots and just focus on the written descriptions, because the stuff I see in most VX games for chip- and charsets gives the game an instant black eye. There ARE exceptions, of course.
I don't mind rips, but I definitely agree that using resources that are EXTREMELY recognizable is a bad move on the designer's part. I was guilty of this in my (thus far) only demo. My future space station was made up of Chrono trigger rips. Considering how well that game has been received throughout history, drawing a comparison to it like that only made my buggy and poorly written product seem all the more inferior.
If you're trying to craft unique experiences for the player, using rips would be fairly contraindicated. When I'm playing a rip-laden game, every time I stop and have one of those "OH! That is where this came from!" moments it takes me out of it.
There are exceptions to this as well. Leo and Leah is a prime example. After playing the game for a while, I didn't really "notice" the ripped stuff anymore, because the game was more than just a sum of its parts.
EDIT - Ah, the joy of a circular post that apparently adds nothing to the overall discussion.

I found out that repairs to make it look brand new again is only $320.
That is really lucky! A couple of years ago, a friend of mine dropped his car in a ditch and repairs came to well over 1500. Of course, he did slide into the ditch and ended up with the car sitting passenger side down.
I've been really fortunate with my car. I got when I was working as a driver for a dealership, basically for free. Aside from a couple of issues I need to deal with, which unfortunately didn't come up back when I was working in a mechanic's shop with a lift, it has done really well for me. I have been very paranoid lately though, as this is the longest I've owned a vehicle without having someone try to drive through me. <searches for a wooden surface to knock on>
From working in the shop, I can tell you that insurance companies are kind of a b!tch to deal with on that side of it. They tell the shop what they will pay, even if it isn't near enough to cover the parts and labor. On one job, the shop ended up having to make a wiring harness for an suv from scratch, since the insurance company wouldn't BUY one! Kind of insane.

If that is in response to my post, sorry! I just thought it was pretty funny how much of an idiot I was being, walking around doing an approximation of the Bane voice while my dog was inspecting every square foot of her yard =)

LockeZ - It may just be the unpatched version of 2k3 I have on this computer talking, but I don't think you can check enemies for a specific status within the DBS. You can check to see if the enemy can act or not, if the enemy's hp is in a certain range, how many turns the enemy has taken, or if the enemy is the player's current target.
This is what I would do:
Make a battle command for the "Target's MP first" ability. Set it to FIGHT.
In the DBS, have "Character uses MP FIRST" as a trigger.
Put a status on the character that keeps them from attacking. Call it NulAtk, make it last 0 rounds so it washes away quick.
Check to see what enemy was targeted by the ability.
Set variables equal to that enemy's hp and mp.
Set variable for the damage you want MP FIRST to do.
If the Mp variable is >= than the damage you want to set for MP FIRST, change Monster's MP - MP FIRST Variable.
If Monster's MP variable is < MP FIRST change Monster's MP - Monster's MP Variable. Change MP FIRST Variable - Monster's MP Variable. Change Monster's HP - MP FIRST Variable.
Or something like that.

Short version: Went out to walk my dog and found that some neighbors were burning something that made the back of my throat unhappy, so I went back inside and got my gas mask on. When my dog was done with her walk, I caught my reflection and started laughing and had to take a picture.
When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to act like a dumbass and post stupid pictures on the internet... okay, so I'm a little early.

I'm currently thinking about slamming my head into a large, incredibly dense, and thus hopefully very painful surface. I was explaining the main story for the rebuilt version of my Star Wars game to a friend of mine, and she pretty much rained all over my parade with "Well, there is a quest in The Old Republic that is a lot like that,"
Ugh, this is what I get for not playing MMOs, even when they have a license that I really enjoy.
This is also what I get for wasting the last two years working on the old broken version of my game, with the old Fischer Price level of storytelling it had, instead of starting to implement the new one as soon as I had it written.
She did explain a little more about the questline, and there might be enough differences to make it okay, but nobody is going to believe I came up with mine independently, which is really going to tick me off.
